Why Makeup Suddenly Sits in Every Line After 45 — And How to Rebuild the Skin Underneath

The root-cause routine for water loss, lipid loss, sun damage and reduced elasticity

Your foundation may not have changed. The surface and the support underneath it have. The fix is not a better concealer — it is a better understanding of what is happening in the skin.

You try a new foundation. It looks fine at first. By midday, it has settled into every fine line around the eyes, collected in the creases beside the nose, and lifted slightly at the edges. You assume it is the wrong formula — too dry, too thick, the wrong finish. You buy something else.

But the product is rarely the problem. The surface and the support beneath it are. Understanding what is actually changing in the skin makes the solution much clearer — and considerably less expensive than continuously replacing foundation.

Why makeup collects in lines — six causes explained

Foundation catching in lines is not a single problem with a single solution. It is usually the combined result of several changes happening in the skin at the same time. These are the six most common.

01

The skin holds less water

When the outer layers of the skin are dehydrated, tiny dry lines and rough patches become more visible on the surface. Foundation catches on the uneven texture instead of sitting smoothly. This is distinct from the deeper structural lines that form over time — dehydration lines respond quickly to hydration. Structural lines require longer-term treatment to improve.

02

The protective lipid "mortar" becomes depleted

The skin can be thought of as a brick wall: skin cells are the bricks and the lipid-rich intercellular matrix is the mortar between them. This mortar slows water loss and lubricates the surface. When it is depleted — through cumulative UV exposure, harsh cleansing or repetitive irritation — the skin becomes rougher, flakier, and less comfortable. The surface no longer holds moisture as effectively, and makeup adheres differently to a drier, rougher texture than it does to a smooth, hydrated one.

03

Cumulative sun exposure weakens the support underneath

UV exposure contributes to the breakdown and disorganisation of collagen and elastin — the structural proteins that keep the skin firm and resilient. Over time, the skin becomes less springy, and established lines remain visible even when the face is at rest. Makeup then has deeper, less-supported folds in which to collect. This is a progressive change that responds to consistent correction rather than a single treatment.

04

The eye area is thin and moves constantly

The skin around the eyes is among the thinnest on the face. Blinking and expression repeatedly fold this delicate area throughout the day. Concealer collects more easily when the skin here is dry, less elastic, or when too many products have been layered on top of each other. Over-application — eye cream, concealer, powder — compresses into folds rather than sitting smoothly. Using less product, more precisely applied, is usually more effective than adding more.

05

The routine can worsen the surface

Two opposite extremes both cause problems. Over-cleansing, frequent exfoliation and stacking several strong actives can disturb the barrier, leaving the skin rougher and drier than it was. At the other extreme, applying thick layers immediately before makeup creates excess slip — products pill against each other, foundations separate, and makeup lifts rather than setting. Five to ten minutes between skincare and makeup application makes a visible difference to how everything settles.

06

Inconsistent treatment never gives the skin time to remodel

Hydration can improve the look of fine lines relatively quickly. But changes linked to collagen, elasticity and sun damage require consistent treatment over weeks and months to become visible. Constantly changing products, or stopping as soon as the skin looks a little better, prevents any cumulative progress. The skin improves gradually — and only in proportion to the consistency of the routine supporting it.

“The skin does not improve from one good week. It improves from many consistent ones. The products that matter are the ones you actually use, in the right order, reliably.”

A simplified approach: prepare, repair, remodel

The most effective approach addresses both the immediate makeup problem and the root causes underneath it — at the same time, through a layered routine. This is how we structure it.

AM
Prep

Prepare in the morning

Use one lightweight eye product and one compatible moisturising skin-prep product. Apply small amounts and allow 5–10 minutes for the layers to settle before makeup. Too much product too close to application time is one of the most common causes of concealer creasing and foundation separation.

Apply eye product first. Wait a moment. Apply moisturiser or SPF. Leave 5–10 minutes before foundation.

PM
Repair

Repair at night with Vitamin A and Vitamin B

Vitamin A (retinol) supports normal cell renewal and the visible improvement of lines, texture and sun damage. Serum 16 uses an encapsulated retinol-and-retinal complex with hydrating support ingredients, designed to deliver results with lower irritation than traditional formulas. Vitamin B3 (niacinamide) supports barrier function, tone and hydration. B Complex contains 10% niacinamide with biotin. Consistent use of both over 8–12 weeks makes a visible and measurable difference to the surface beneath makeup.

Eye Doctor is the dedicated retinol treatment for the delicate eye area. Serum 16 is a facial retinoid — experienced users may apply carefully around the outer crow’s-feet only, keeping it away from eyelids and the lash line.

Weekly
+

Add targeted support where the skin needs it most

Targeted masks and concentrated treatments used consistently between daily steps accelerate surface improvement. The Bio Cellulose Mask and Restore Moisture-Rich Mask both deliver intensive hydration that improves surface texture. X-Age supports the broader correction of firmness and elasticity over time.

Used weekly or fortnightly, targeted masks produce faster visible progress than daily skincare alone.

Monthly
+

Progressive remodelling with growth-factor microneedling

The AnteAGE Home Microneedling Intro Kit combines a 0.25 mm roller with a dedicated microneedling solution containing growth factors, cytokines, and hyaluronic acid. For suitable customers, this is the progressive treatment layer that supports collagen induction and surface remodelling over time — addressing the structural changes in the skin that hydration and actives alone cannot fully reach.

Use only the dedicated AnteAGE solution during microneedling. Keep all eye products, retinoids and acids away from freshly treated skin until the channels have closed and the instructions allow normal skincare to resume.

Makeup application tip

Apply foundation and concealer in thin layers. Use less product directly inside under-eye folds, smile lines and deeper lines. Less product, more precisely placed, sits better in lines than heavier coverage applied everywhere.

Find your starting point

Each bundle pairs one eligible eye product with one eligible prep or repair product — qualifying for the 15% paired discount. Choose the combination that matches where you want to start.

Morning Makeup Prep

Lightweight daytime eye hydration plus a moisturising base. Apply sparingly and allow both to settle before makeup.

Vitamin A + B Night Repair

For experienced customers. Eye Doctor around the eye area only; Serum 16 on the wider face. Do not layer both over the same eye contour.

Retinoid-Free Firming Route

A gentler route for those not ready for retinol. Hydration, peptides and a botanical retinol alternative within a consistent routine.

Growth-Factor Remodelling Plan

Use I-Complex on normal non-needling mornings. Use only the dedicated AnteAGE solution on needling days and keep all actives away from freshly treated skin.

Event Hydration Reset

An occasional hydration-focused pairing before an event. Improves the appearance of dry, crepey surface texture — not a replacement for consistent corrective care.

From Medico Beauty

How we layer the morning makeup prep routine

AM

Cleanse gently. No exfoliating cleanser on mornings before makeup. A cream or hydrating cleanser leaves the surface smooth without disrupting the barrier.

AM

Hyaluronic acid or hydrating serum. Applied on damp skin, this pulls moisture into the surface and reduces the fine dry texture that makeup catches on.

AM

Eye product, applied sparingly. Use one small amount of the eye product only. Too much creates slip that causes concealer to slide and crease. Tap gently — do not rub.

AM

Moisturiser and SPF as the final skincare step. Apply to the face but use very little in the areas directly under the eyes. Allow 5–10 minutes to settle completely before foundation.

AM

Apply makeup in thin layers. A thin application of foundation sits better in lines than a heavy one. A small amount of concealer, pressed (not dragged) into the under-eye area, stays put longer than a thick coverage layer.

PM

Double cleanse to remove SPF and makeup fully. Residual SPF and makeup left in pores contributes to congestion and surface texture over time. A thorough evening cleanse protects the work the night routine will do.

PM

Retinoid on the face, eye-specific treatment around the eye. Never apply Serum 16 to the eyelids or lash line. Use Eye Doctor around the eye contour for dedicated retinol treatment in that zone.
