How to Get the Most out of Your Serum

A serum is an easy way to deliver active ingredients directly to your skin. Different from a moisturiser, it offers a concentrated dose of healthy ingredients that address your major skin concern.

Serums deliver powerful active ingredients to the cellular level of your skin, helping to clear up your skin issues, whether it’s premature ageing, acne or another common concern. With so many serums on the market today, it's difficult to figure out which one to use and how often to use it. Here's how to  find the perfect serum and make sure you get the most out of using it.

Serum basics

Always apply a serum after cleansing and toning, in the morning and at night. Why after cleansing and toning? You’ll want to make sure that your pores and clear and the cells are ready to absorb all the great benefits of the serum you’ve chosen (and likely spent good money on). Cleansing removes makeup, dirt, and debris that has built up in the skin during the day. Toning clears the pores. However, you’ll want to apply it before applying any other skincare products, including moisturisers.

How often should I use a serum?

Always read the label on the product you’re using. Serums are an essential part of one’s morning or evening skincare routine, several times a week. While some serums are gentle enough to use daily, others are ideal to use only once or twice a week. Click here to download

Microneedling & serums

If you want the serum’s active ingredients to penetrate deeply into the skin, you’ll need to do one extra step once per week. That step is microneedling.

What is microneedling?

Although microneedling often takes place in a doctor’s office, a dermaroller tool allow you to do the process, albeit at a more superficial level, at home. The roller contains tiny needles that make small puncture wounds on the top layer of the skin. These small wounds signal the body to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin and begin the healing process. In addition to boosting the skin’s natural healing process, the dermaroller allows the active ingredients of your serum of choice to penetrate the deeper layers of the dermis.

How to safely do it at home

The microneedling process is safe to do at home, provided you take several precautions, which we’ve outlined in a previous blog. [embed]https://youtu.be/Deb3MJl5k3Y[/embed]

Masks & Serums

Masks can also help you get more out of the active ingredients in your serum. Masks are designed to remove the impurities that can clog pores as well as remove the top layers of dull, dead skin cells that get in the way of your natural glow. Just like microneedling, masks ensure the active ingredients that make up your favourite serums are able to penetrate the deeper layers of the skin and do what they’re supposed to do.

What masks work best with a serum?

A profession consultation will be able to shed light on the best products to use to meet your skincare goals. However, there are two products we recommend. Pure Enzymes Exfoliating Mask  relies on cranberry enzymes and L-Lactic Acid to decongest the complexion and revitalise the skin. It also contains natural moisture factors to keep skin hydrated. Apply once or twice per week, after cleansing and before your serum, for best results. Detox Activated Charcoal Mask removes environmental pollution from deep down in the pores. Environmental pollution, among other factors, may contribute to premature aging. Detox is a charcoal and clay-based mask that removes pollutants from the pores . Use it up to three times a week, after cleansing and before your serum, especially if you live in an urban environment.   Want more great skincare tips?
