Detox Your Skincare Routine: 5 Simple Swaps for Product Junkies

Did you know the average woman spends about £1700 on cosmetics every year? If that seems like a lot dosh, take a look in your drawer or cabinet at the products that make up your skincare routine.  If you’re like many people, it’s full of creams, serums, masks, sprays, cleansers and other products that promise to transform our skin into the healthy glow of our dreams. Although you may use some of the products regularly, you may also have products that didn’t deliver the results they promised. The truth is you don’t need to use a ton of products to have clear, healthy skin; you just need to invest in the right ones.
Skincare Routine Prior to Product Detox
Recently, a client came into the office, desperate to pare down her skincare routine. She was using a total of 15 different products and wanted to reclaim her time and get better results. Although she was concerned with hyperpigmentation, some of the products she was using were actually reducing the effectiveness of some of the other products. By reducing the number of products in her skincare routine, she was able to save time and see the difference in her skin.

Skincare Routine Essentials

A Good Cleansing Routine

The foundation of any healthy skincare routine is cleansing. Unfortunately, this is an area where people tend to spend the least amount of money. If you want clear, healthy skin, put the majority of your money into a good cleanser! If your skin is oily or it doesn’t feel tight after cleansing, use an exfoliating cleanser daily. On the other hand, if your skin feels tight after cleansing and you rely on a moisturiser, use a gentle cleanser daily and an exfoliating cleanser once or twice a week if you wish. Regardless, make sure the cleanser you use contains lactic acid, which not only resurfaces the skin, it also rehydrates.

Purity Clean gel cleanser

My client used two types of cleansers in her daily skincare routine. Both made her skin feel really dry and gave her a tight sensation after cleansing. This is a clear sign she was using the wrong cleanser for her skin type. I advised her to replace her current cleansers with  Purity Clean Exfoliating Cleanser. Purity Clean is formulated to regulate the cell renewal process, brighten skin and even tackle her main concern--pigmentation. You only need a pea-sized amount each time you wash your face.

Retinol & Antioxidants

Antioxidants are powerful ingredients to add to your skincare routine, especially if you’re using treatments and serums containing Vitamin A or Retinol. They protect your skin from free radicals, help prevent premature aging and minimize the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Retinol and antioxidants often go hand-in-hand. Many people begin using Retinol, but stop using it due to irritation or dryness. However, Retinol has to be used consistently for best results. If you’ve developed irritation and redness before, try using a lower strength Retinol at least every second day. Sensitive skin? Mix it with your antioxidant cream. My client was using a Retinol product that she loved. I suggested using Define Vitamin A Resurfacing Treatment after her nightly Retinol product. Containing 2% Retinol and several types of alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), Define improves the effectiveness of the Retinol products. Additionally, you can dab it on the skin around your eyes, if that’s a concern area of yours. The product strengthens skin by stimulating collagen and elastin production.

Define 2% Retinol AGP Complex

Pure C 100% L-Ascorbic Acid

I also suggested adding Pure C Crystals to her skincare routine. The crystals deliver Vitamin C ascorbic acid to the skin in an easily absorbable state. The product helps to ramp up collagen production, which is not only essential to reversing the signs of premature ageing; it’s also essential for addressing the client’s main concern--pigmentation. Simply mix a pinch of Pure C in with Define and apply to the skin.

Protect SPF30 hydrating sunscreen

Mineral Sunscreen SPF

Sun protection is a must in any skincare routine! However, high SPFs don’t necessarily mean more protection. Research shows there’s very little difference between SPF 30 and SPF 50. Although many people use a cream or moisturiser that contains SPF daily, mineral makeup is the best way to protect your skin.

Mineral makeup reflects harmful UVA and UVB rays from the skin’s surface. It’s natural and doesn’t contain the irritants and perfumes that other foundations and powders contain. Since it’s available in all shades, including translucent, even men can use it to protect their skin.

Use Protect hydrating spray mineral sunscreen SPF30 that dries completely clear. It can be used directly over mineral makeup. When outdoors and in direct sunlight re-apply every two hours and wear a hat!

Rescue balm

Daytime Hydrator

We’ve been led to believe that moisturiser is a very important part of our daily skincare routines. Unfortunately, most of us are using the wrong one! Many moisturisers are humectant, meaning they draw moisture out of the skin. Additionally, using the wrong moisturiser may make your Retinol products less effective. Retinol is designed to push cells from the surface of the skin and moisturisers tend to prevent damaged skin from coming off the face.My client was using two different types of moisturiser and a water spray. I advised she replace these products with Rescue+ Intense Hydrating Balm and Mask. Rescue+ is concentrated with all-natural ingredients that accelerate skin healing, reduce irritation and inflammation and can be used a moisturiser or an overnight mask. The mistake that many people make is relying on their moisturiser to keep the skin hydrated when in reality, the right products encourage your skin to maintain a balanced hydration level.

Mystic hydrating spray

Additionally, I suggested replacing her water spray with Mystic Hydrating Treatment, a heavy water spray that plumps the skin and refreshes mineral makeup. Mystic and be mixed with Rescue+ to minimise the intensity of the balm to create a treatment with the consistency of a serum.

Revamp your skincare routine!

Even Skin Kit

The product replacements I suggested for my client addressed her concerns with hyperpigmentation. If you’d like a more even skin tone, try the Even Skin Tone 4-Piece Essential Kit, which contains Purity Clean, Simply Brilliant antioxidant brightening serum, Retinol-rich Serum 16, and Hydrate+ SPF17 daily moisturiser
